Two attractive young people are sitting on the beach, smoking thin cigarettes. The boy is wearing hip sunglasses and has beautiful blue eyes. The girl has long, straight blonde hair and might be your favorite band’s drummer. The girl says to the boy: What do you think it’s like? And the boy says: What? And the girl points. Further down the beach a fat man in a torn shirt is helping his physically disabled son into the water, and the son is clawing at him, screaming, saying he does not want to. The father says you’re making a scene and the son says I don’t have to do it if I don’t want to and the father slaps his son across the face. The attractive young boy says: You know I don’t really know. And the attractive young girl adjusts her bikini and puts on her own stylish pair of sunglasses and says: Well what about the kids we went to high school with? Like the one guy with the boils who dated that religious girl who would always cry when she got bad grades? And the attractive boy takes out his phone and responds to a text message that says “I want 2 fuck you 2night” by saying “I want 2 fuck u 2 :)” and then puts his phone away and says: Why all of these questions, I do not know, I am one guy, how am I supposed to know what it is like to be other people.
A man approaches them. He has a mustache and once had to go to court for shooting an amateur pornographic film in the parking lot of a post office. He says: Do you mind if I take a picture of you two? They suggest, by shrugging: No, we do not mind.
Later that night he will post this black and white picture of two attractive young people looking bored and attractive to his Tumblr. Within an hour the picture will be reblogged 126 times, once by a boy who’s afraid to eat in public, once by a girl ashamed of her parents’ first-generation-American eccentricities and traditions. In the picture’s out-of-focus background you can almost make out the overweight father and his physically disabled son hugging, crying, the former in that moment telling the latter that he’s so sorry he lost his temper, let’s please keep this our secret.
